Georgetown University Math Club

The Math Club of Georgetown University (Gamma Epsilon Squared Kappa) consists of students who devote some time each week to discussing mathematics. It also is the MAA Student Chapter of Georgetown and includes the Pi Mu Epsilon Chapter.

As of fall 2005, we meet on Wednesdays at approximately 8:00 PM near Reiss 256. For information, contact vogta@georgetown.edu by e-mail.

ARCHIVAL PROBLEMS :

1. With a compass and a straight edge only, construct :

(i) an equilateral triangle
(ii) a square
(iii) a regular pentagon.

(Credit to William Dunham, Gauss, and Euclid)

2. Sum the followng sequences:

(i) ((-1)^(n+1) )(1/n) for n =1, 2, ...
(ii) ((-1)^(n+1))(n^2)/(n^3 + 1) for n = 1, 2,... .

(Credit to George Benke, Richard Askey, and the Seattle MathFest)

PROBLEM (posed 10-07-03) :

Suppose you intersect a 2 by 2 rectangle with a 1 by 3 rectangle
in such a way that they are coplanar and one side of each rectangle is
parallel to, or collinear with, one side of the other.

Now do the same with a pair of 1 by 2 rectangles.

What are the possible figures you get in each case?
