Carolingian Writing Centers

Adapted from a map in B. Bischoff, Manuscripts and Libraries in the Age of Charlemagne, translated by Michael Gorman (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1994), a collection of Bischoff's most seminal and valuable essays on the subject on which he was an unrivalled master, this presents for orientation a conspectus of the writing centers of Carolingian Europe. There are higher-resolution subsets of the same map as well:

• Italy
• Gaul (roughly overlapping modern France)
• Gaul and Germany (northern Gaul and central Germany to include as many related centers as possible -- this will probably fill your screen, but as a b/w image should not take too long to load)
