KEY TRAITS DEPICTED IN AMERICAN LITERATURE
Be on the lookout for these in the stories and poems. Since we find them in the literature, they may reflect some historical reality. Some of the qualities, such as self-reliance and toughness, Americans like to attribute to themselves. One question we have to consider is, Were (and are) these qualities more mythic than real? Other qualities, such as loneliness and racism, Americans did (and do) not like to admit, but according to the evidence of literature and history, they were (and are) unquestionably there (and here). *Loneliness and Isolation (EXAMPLES: Poe, "The Raven"; Hawthorne, "Young Goodman Brown"; Huck Finn; Emily Dickinson; James; etc.)
Toughness (Early Spanish and French explorers; Native Americans; Later immigrants; Blacks; etc.) How does toughness relate to Loneliness and Self-Reliance? Other qualities?
Sense of Adventure
Exploration (and Exploitation)
Experimentalism
Freedom and Opportunity
*Self-Reliance (Title of an essay by Emerson, 1841; 1859: Sam Smiles, SELF-HELP, published in England but popular here)
Racism (the 19th century classic treatment is HUCK FINN. In the 20th century it is Ellison's INVISIBLE MAN. Many others.
