Through the use of discourse analysis, we can understand some larger social and cultural realities. Looking at the way a sub-culture identifies with and discusses travel can explain a lot about trends in a society. In our society traveling for pleasure/hobby seems to serve as a measure for among other things, a person's financial and class status (Even the traveler on the most limited budgets have to have enough money to afford the cost of transportation to their destination.), education and desire for expanding their horizons. These people are excited by various aspects of travel such as adventure and escape. Upon returning home, they often are attracted to or seek out other people with whom they can discuss their journeys. A community is formed around a similar interest, which in this case is the love of travel. Members of this community join together because they have a mutual understanding of what if means to be a ‘traveler'. They recognize that there is a huge and exciting world out there and they are interested in sharing their experiences. They enjoy the excitement of fantasizing by listening to other people's tales or re-living their own adventures through story-telling. Discourse becomes an important tool for sharing these experiences. What is relevant to this project is the fact that new technology (the internet) provides a new location for members of the travel community to explore, read as well as converse about travel.
