Languages and Linguistics:
The Interdependence of Theory, Data, and Application

Edited by Deborah Tannen and James E. Alatis

Georgetown University Press, 1986.

This volume, which is currently out of print, gathers papers based on lectures presented at the 1985 Georgetown University Round Table on Languages and Linguistics.  The contributors were all faculty members at the 1985 LSA/TESOL Institute which Deborah Tannen organized and directed at Georgetown University.  Thus, this collection is a companion volume to Linguistics in Context: Connecting Observation and Understanding, which is composed of papers based on lectures delivered at that Institute.  The goal of the institute was to emphasize and encourage the humanistic foundations of linguistics and language learning and teaching.  The papers in this collection, as a result, reflect that focus, providing broadly interdisciplinary and uniformly context-sensitive, hermeneutic, and text-based analysis.
