Intensive Spanish Program
Typically, Language Programs include two levels, i.e., Introductory and Intermediate. The Intensive Spanish Program, however, includes three levels of language education (Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced) designed for languages and linguistics majors. Since the School of Languages and Linguistics joined the College, the Intensive Program is not limited to FLL majors anymore. Still, the program is intensive in all senses of the word: these are 5-6 credit courses that require daily attendance and homework.
Language Program Director. As LPD I select and prepare pedagogical and assessment materials; supervise instructors and coordinators of the program, and educate instructors. I also serve as a bridge between the Deans Offices, the Chair, and the Spanish instructors responsible for the courses. In 2008 I secured funding to renew both programs so as to meet the expectations of the 2007 Modern Language Association Report on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and to better suit Georgetown’s tradition of a liberal arts education. Intensive & SFS Spanish courses promote language learning through the development of intercultural awareness and critical thinking.
The presence of technology in the curriculum has increased year after year. It began with the introduction of electronic discussion lists for each section to increase writing fluency and communication, and the exchange of teaching and testing materials over the internet among instructors and administrators.In 2002I implemented Blackboard across all four levels of the Intensive Program, transforming the program into a paperless program, since all materials, including all audiovisual materials, hand-outs, syllabi, and instructions are readily available over the Internet 24 hours a day from anywhere. At the click of a button, students can watch all audiovidual materials, complete their workbook exercises on-line, and get immediate feedback from any lab or their personal laptop. It is important to stress that Blackboard is used as a tool to make learning and teaching more efficient. It does not replace contact time between student and instructor, to the contrary, it maximizes it. Culture, a strong component of the Intensive Program, is introduced through films accompanied by viewing guides, and literary anthologies, as well as Internet web searches for reading practice and cultural information. Both culture and technology are integrated in all testing materials. All Intensive Instructors share a Teacher's Library in Blackboard, where they can access activities to practice the four skills, links to radio stations, electronic newspapers, recordings, dictionnaries, and grammar reviews, and old exams, for example. Most of those materials have been produced by the instructors and shared through Blackboard. The Programs’ success is due largely to the quality of their instructors, and especially their coordinators. We have worked closely to create a sense of cooperation that has translated into dynamic, well-organized syllabi, reliable testing materials and programs characterized by homogeneity across sections, coherence between levels, and accountability. SPAN-011 Intensive Basic Spanish
Along with Intensive Intermediate Spanish, this course was originally developed for FLL students and therefore assumes a certain level of motivation to learn languages. The course aims to develop students' ability to communicate in Spanish and to help them acquire the skills necessary to understand oral and written texts. Different aspects of Hispanic culture will be introduced in reading passages and videos. Grading criteria are based on lexical breadth, grammatical accuracy, reading and listening comprehension skills, and a basic knowledge of Spanish-speaking areas. Credits: 6 Prerequisites: None
SPAN-032 Intensive Intermediate Spanish
Continuing from Intensive Basic Spanish, and designed for highly motivated students who seek daily contact with the language, this course is designed to further develop students' ability to communicate satisfactorily in Spanish in everyday situations and to help them acquire skills necessary for effective speaking and writing in Spanish. Taking readings, documentaries and films as point of departure, the cultural component of the course grows significantly to include current issues encompassing the economy, politics, and culture of the Spanish-speaking areas on both sides of the Atlantic. Credits: 6 Prerequisites: SPAN-011 or Placement Test
SPAN-111 Intensive Advanced Spanish I
Like the other three courses in the Intensive Program, the course has been designed for highly motivated students who seek daily contact with the language. The course assumes prior knowledge of basic vocabulary and grammar, and places a special emphasis on mastery of some of the more difficult aspects of grammar, as well as on more formal vocabulary. All materials included have been produced by native speakers for native speakers. Through the use of selected films (-subtitles), short stories, and a history textbook, the course will broaden the student's understanding of Peninsular geography, history, culture, and current issues, including migration, the transition form dictatorship to democracy, and terrorism ( 60% of the grade depends on content). Credits: 5 Prerequisites: SPAN-032 or Placement Test.
SPAN-112 Intensive Advanced Spanish II
Like the other three courses in the Intensive Program, the course has been designed for highly motivated students who seek daily contact with the language. This course is the continuation of Intensive Advanced I and shares some of the same textbooks. Students continue to develop the four communicative skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on more difficult aspects of grammar and formal vocabulary. All materials included have been produced by native speakers for native speakers. Through the use of selected films, short stories, and a history textbook, the course will broaden the student's understanding of Latin American geography, history, culture, and current issues, including migration, democratization processes, political violence, and drug-trafficking (60% of the grade is depends on content).
