Course Description:

English 253, 254, 255 consists of detailed study of the literature of the United States from colonial times to the present. Students will read, discuss, and write about representative writings of the period, aiming always to elucidate the intellectual, cultural, historical, and political values that inform the literature as well as paying attention to its literary and aesthetic structures. The course is designed to familiarize the reader with prominent American writers as well as salient features of American literary thought and expression. The three courses need not be taken in sequence.
