American Literature: 1910-1945
Spring 1990
Weber State College

Professor Robert Hogge

Introduction: Welcome to this class: American Literature--The Modern Period! During this quarter, we'll look at a wide range of authors: the "established" major writers (Frost, O'Neill, Hemingway, Faulkner, and Penn Warren), a group of often undervalued white women writers (Glasgow, Wharton, Cather, and Glaspell), and non-canonical figures representing America's varied cultures and ethnic traditions (Toomer, Odets, Di Donato, Mourning Dove, and Younghill Kang). Our goal will be to expand our awareness of the period's literary diversity and richness.

Required Textbook: Lauter, Paul, et al., eds. The Heath Anthology of American Literature, Volume 2 (Lexington, MA: D. C. Heath, 1990), 2615 p.
