VO2 Max exercise stress test

Disclaimer:

The following videos are not created at Georgetown University nor are they affiliated in anyway with Georgetown University. These videos are demonstrations created by other institutions and organizations for educational purposes. The procedures performed in the Exercise in GWI study are very close to what is shown in the videos below. The protocols of the procedures in the Exercise in GWI may be slightly different and will be thoroughly outlined in the informed consent that you will be reviewing and signing. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.

The majority of YouTube videos are not accurate in demonstrating medical procedures, therefore the following videos have been carefully selected by our research group to best demonstrate the different components of our experiments.

Notes about lumbar puncture:

  1. 1)Your lumbar puncture (LP) will be performed by interventional radiology or by anesthesiology

  1. 2)If your LP is done by interventional radiology, you will be lying down on your stomach for the procedure.

  1. 3)If your LP is done by anesthesiology, you will be lying on your side in a fetal position.

  1. 4)Both positions are safe and effective ways of performing an LP.

  1. 5)EMLA cream (topical anesthetic) will be applied to the back prior to the procedure.

  1. 6)Lidocaine (local anesthetic) will be injected in the back prior to the insertion of the pencil tip needle.

  1. 7)A total of 20mL of cerebral spinal fluid (CFS) will be collected. Your body will replenish that CFS amount within 3 hours.

  1. 8)There is minimal risk for hitting a nerve because insertion is made between L3-L4.

Notes about fMRI

  1. 1)Our Georgetown facility also utilizes a Siemens 3T MRI system. The machine and room layout in the video is very similar to what you will see at Georgetown.

  1. 2)The Siemens 3T MRI provide image results in a shorter time and offer patients a more comfortable, less claustrophobic experience.

  1. 3)Please inform us if you are claustrophobic, have any embedded metal items, and/or have tattoos.

  1. 4)Total scan time will take approximately 1 hour each day.

  1. 5)Before you are placed in the actual scanner, you will be placed in a “mock” scanner to test for fit and comfort.

Notes about VO2 max stress test:

  1. 1)Your VO2 max stress test will be performed at the pulmonary function lab.

  1. 2)A scuba-like mouth piece will be used instead of a face mask shown in the video.

  1. 3)Your stress test will take around 30 minutes to complete.

  1. 4)Please wear athletic clothes and tennis shoes to the stress test.

  1. 5)You will have a 12 lead EKG attached to you when you are exercising to monitor your heart.

  1. 6)You will also have your blood pressure, heart rate, and blood oxygen saturation monitored throughout the exercise.
